Summary

This article explains the operator, locations, features, and use of Japan’s ID VOX ID photo booths for Taiwanese readers living in or traveling to Japan. ID VOX is operated by 株式会社扶桑プレシジョン (FUSO PRECISION), headquartered in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto. Established in September 1995, the company has capital of ¥15 million and 15 employees as of July 2026. Its main business is printer-related software and image processing.

The id-vox.jp domain was registered in July 2014 under the name of 扶桑’s representative director, 竹田直人. From 2017 to 2019, the website was titled “カジタク証明写真機 ID VOX,” and the Android app’s package name at the time began with com.fuso. In June 2020, カジタク (KJS) spun off its ID photo booth business and sold it to DNP. DNP began converting the acquired IDVOX booths to ID-Spot in 2022. Since August 2022, id-vox.jp has operated under 扶桑’s name. These are separately operated networks; neither party has publicly explained 扶桑’s role during the カジタク period.

On September 25, 2026, this site compiled the official location list entry by entry, counting 1,320 locations across 39 prefectures. There were no locations in eight prefectures: Akita, Yamagata, Niigata, Yamanashi, Tottori, Shimane, Kochi, and Miyazaki. 扶桑’s 2023 press release reported approximately 1,100 machines nationwide. Aichi had the most locations, at 245, but the company has not explained why. Counts based on store names showed 552 locations at ミニストップ (MINISTOP) and 300 at スギ薬局 nationwide. Of Aichi’s 245 locations, 118 were at スギ薬局 and 64 at MINISTOP.

Feature labels in the official list indicated 1,255 locations with an extra résumé-size print, 1,282 with background compositing, 1,307 with QR payments, including Alipay and WeChat Pay, 1,316 with digital downloads through an app, 500 with My Number card web applications, and 189 selling eSIMs, a service launched on July 23, 2026. 扶桑 is not among the four supported operators listed by J-LIS for My Number card applications through photo booths, and the company has not explained how its service works.

According to the official FAQ, standard photo prints generally cost ¥900 or ¥1,000. Digital files are downloaded by entering a 10-digit access code into the Japanese-only IDPhotoDL2 app; photos are stored for six months. For Taiwan passport photos, select “パスポート” at 45 × 35 mm, choose a plain white background, and leave beauty mode off. Taiwan’s representative office in Japan nevertheless recommends having the photos taken at a photography studio.

Outside MINISTOP convenience stores and inside drugstores such as スギ薬局 in Japan, you will often see an ID photo booth called “ID VOX.” These machines are called “証明写真機” in Japanese; in Hong Kong, ID photos are commonly called “證件相.” The operator is a Kyoto company with 15 employees that started out making printer software: 株式会社扶桑プレシジョン (FUSO PRECISION). On September 25, 2026, this site compiled ID VOX’s official location list entry by entry, counting 1,320 locations across 39 prefectures nationwide. 扶桑’s own 2023 press release reported approximately 1,100 machines nationwide.

This article covers three things:

  • What kind of company 扶桑プレシジョン is, and how the ID VOX name relates to the “IDVOX” business acquired by 大日本印刷 (DNP) in 2020.
  • Where ID VOX is found across Japan, and how many locations carry each of the six feature labels in the official list.
  • The practical steps, sizes, prices, and payment options for Taiwanese users, along with how to download digital files through the app.

ID photo booths and the photo sticker booths found in Japanese amusement arcades, known as purikura (プリクラ), are two different types of machine. The former take ID photos to fixed specifications; the latter produce photo stickers for entertainment. For the history of photo sticker booths, see Thirty Years of Japanese Purikura. To find the nearest ID photo booth, this site’s photobooth nationwide map of ID photo booths in Japan organizes locations from three operators by prefecture. This article focuses on the brand and how to use it. For a comparison of all three operators, see the overview of Japan’s ID photo booths. Each of the other two operators also has its own article: Photo ME (ME Group Japan) and Ki-Re-i / ID-Spot (DNP).

1. 扶桑プレシジョン: A Printer Software Company in Kyoto

ID VOX is operated by 株式会社扶桑プレシジョン. Its official company profile, checked on September 25, 2026, lists the following:

Item Details
Headquarters Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto
Established September 1, 1995
Capital ¥15 million
Representative Representative director 竹田直人
Employees 15, as of July 2026
Main business Software development, primarily printer-related software and image processing

According to its website, 扶桑 began by developing installation software for printer drivers and now describes itself as “a company that makes printing-related products.” Besides ID VOX, it offers an image tampering detection service, the wacocoro vending machine for Kyoto souvenirs, the Snap3 souvenir photo printer for tourist destinations, TriPri-ID ID photo software, and the PRISMO colorimeter (扶桑プレシジョン official website).

In other words, a software company with just over a dozen employees is behind an ID photo network spanning more than a thousand locations nationwide. The company has not explained whether it makes the booth hardware itself or outsources production, or who handles routine inspections and repairs. This site found no public information on those points.

2. ID VOX and DNP’s “IDVOX”: One Name, Two Networks

Searching for ID VOX in Japan often brings up reports that “DNP acquired IDVOX in 2020,” which can make it seem as though today’s ID VOX also belongs to DNP. The timeline, based on the parties’ public information, is as follows:

Date Fact Source
July 2014 The id-vox.jp domain was registered under the name of 扶桑’s representative director, 竹田直人. The contact phone number and email address were both 扶桑’s. WHOIS records from JPRS, Japan’s domain registry
2017–2019 The website title was “カジタク証明写真機 ID VOX,” and the footer copyright belonged to カジタク. The Android app linked from the website had a package name beginning with com.fuso. Website archives: April 2017 and March 2018
June 2020 カジタク, renamed KJS in March 2020 and a subsidiary of イオンディライト, transferred its ID photo booth business into a new company and sold all its shares to DNPフォトイメージングジャパン. イオンディライト announcement and DNP press release
August 2022 id-vox.jp was redesigned, and its footer copyright changed to 扶桑プレシジョン. August 2022 website archive
October 2022 DNP announced that it would convert the “IDVOX” booths acquired from KJS to its new ID-Spot brand. DNP press release
June 2023 扶桑 issued a press release stating that there were approximately 1,100 ID VOX machines nationwide. 扶桑 press release on @Press

These records establish that what DNP acquired in 2020 was the ID photo booth business operated by カジタク (KJS). DNP subsequently began converting those machines to its own ID-Spot brand; DNP’s website also explicitly states that IDVOX booths are being replaced by ID-Spot in stages. Meanwhile, the ID VOX website domain has been registered under the name of 扶桑’s representative since 2014, the app from the カジタク period used a 扶桑 package name, and the website has operated under 扶桑’s name since 2022. The ID VOX and DNP ID-Spot booths seen on the street today therefore belong to two separately operated networks. For the history of the DNP branch, from コニカミノルタ to ID-Spot, see the Ki-Re-i / ID-Spot article.

A timeline created by this site, titled “One Name, Two Networks.” The left column shows 扶桑’s ID VOX: the domain was registered under the company president’s name in 2014, the website began using 扶桑’s name in 2022, and this site counted 1,320 locations in 2026. The right column shows the カジタク booths: the booth business was sold to DNP in 2020, DNP renamed the booths ID-Spot in 2022, and this site counted 1,108 ID-Spot locations in 2026. The 2017 row spans both columns and shows the website title “カジタク証明写真機 ID VOX.”

This site created the timeline from the public information in this section’s table. The location counts were compiled entry by entry from the two operators’ official lists on September 25, 2026.

Neither party has publicly explained what role 扶桑 played during the カジタク period or what contractual relationship existed between them, so this site makes no assumptions. The company has also not explained whether any of today’s 1,320 locations still have machines from the カジタク period.

3. Scale: This Site Counted 1,320 Locations; the Company Reported About 1,100 Machines in 2023

There are two figures for ID VOX’s scale. They are presented side by side here, without subtracting one from the other:

  • This site’s entry-by-entry compilation of ID VOX’s official location list on September 25, 2026: 1,320 locations. The unit is an installation location.
  • 扶桑’s June 6, 2023 press release: approximately 1,100 machines nationwide.

The figures are three years apart and use different units. The company has not explained whether each list entry equals one machine, or how a store with two machines is counted.

These 1,320 locations span 39 prefectures. Eight prefectures have no listed locations: Akita, Yamagata, Niigata, Yamanashi, Tottori, Shimane, Kochi, and Miyazaki. Areas with higher counts include:

Prefecture Locations
Aichi 245
Osaka 94
Gifu 88
Kyoto 73
Shizuoka 68
Tokyo 52

Aichi alone has 245 locations, approximately 18.6% of the national total and far more than Tokyo’s 52. A concentration in Chubu and Kansai is a clear feature of ID VOX’s distribution. The company has not explained why Aichi has so many. What this site can do is count the store names in the list: of the 1,320 locations nationwide, 552 are at MINISTOP, approximately 42%, and 300 are at スギ薬局, approximately 23%. Of Aichi’s 245 locations, 118 are at スギ薬局 and 64 at MINISTOP. These are facts about the distribution of store names, not the company’s explanation for Aichi’s high count.

A dot map of Japan’s ID photo booths created by this site. Gray dots represent the 22,369 ID photo booth locations compiled across three operators nationwide; blue dots represent ID VOX’s 1,320 locations. The blue dots are visibly concentrated around Aichi with 245, Gifu with 88, and Osaka with 94. Tokyo has 52 and Hokkaido has 66. Okinawa’s 11 locations appear in an inset at the upper left. Eight prefectures, including Akita and Yamagata, have no ID VOX locations.

Each dot represents one installation location, plotted proportionally using its latitude and longitude. Okinawa appears in a separate inset at the same scale. The gray dots show the overall distribution of ID photo booths in Japan, while the blue dots show ID VOX: dense in Tokai and Kinki, sparse in Tohoku, Shikoku, and southern Kyushu. The data came from this site’s entry-by-entry compilation of the official Photo ME, DNP, and ID VOX location lists on September 25, 2026.

Other common installation sites include post offices, with 44 locations; ビックカメラ, with 22; ward offices, with 13; and LAWSON stores in Okinawa, with 11. Of Hokkaido’s 66 locations, 64 are at サッポロドラッグストアー. For locations from each operator within Aichi, see photobooth’s Aichi ID photo booth page.

4. What Makes It Different: Six Feature Labels in the Official List

Every entry in ID VOX’s official list includes service icons. This site counted them entry by entry on September 25, 2026. Of the 1,320 locations nationwide, the following numbers carried each feature label:

Official label Official explanation, summarized Locations
履歴書サイズのおまけ — extra résumé-size print When taking passport or other photo sizes, an additional résumé-size photo is printed in the unused space on the photo sheet. 1,255
背景合成 — background compositing Choose from 10 background colors. The FAQ notes that some machines have a fixed background color. 1,282
QR決済 — QR payments QR code payments are available. 1,307
アプリ対応 — app support Download digital files through the dedicated IDPhotoDL2 app. 1,316
マイナンバーWEB申請 — My Number card web applications Use the photo just taken to apply for or renew a My Number card directly. 500
eSIM販売 — eSIM sales Prepaid eSIMs have been sold at the booths since July 23, 2026. 189

The table shows that almost every ID VOX location supports QR payments and digital downloads through the app. Background color selection is available at 1,282 locations; the remaining 38 may have fixed backgrounds. Only 500 locations, fewer than 40%, allow direct My Number card applications, and only a small minority sell eSIMs.

A bar chart created by this site, titled “How Many Locations Have Each of the Six Features?” Of 1,320 ID VOX locations nationwide, 1,316 support digital downloads through the app, 1,307 support QR payments, 1,282 offer background color selection, 1,255 provide an extra résumé-size print, 500 support My Number card applications, and 189 sell eSIMs.

The full bar length represents 1,320 locations. The first four features nearly fill the bars, while the last two account for only part of the total.

An Extra Résumé-Size Print

When taking passport-size photos at 45 × 35 mm, the booth uses the unused space on the photo sheet to print an additional résumé-size photo at 40 × 30 mm. The company calls this an “おまけ,” or bonus. Someone in Japan on a working holiday or studying abroad who needs both passport photos and photos for job applications can get both sizes in one session. This feature is marked at 1,255 locations nationwide.

Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay Are Accepted

The official FAQ lists cash and QR code payments. The six supported QR payment services are PayPay, d払い, 楽天ペイ, メルペイ, WeChat Pay, and Alipay. Travelers who have only Alipay or WeChat Pay can therefore pay as well. The receipt is printed on the right side of the photo sheet.

My Number Card Web Applications: What the Company Has Not Explained

J-LIS, the Japan Agency for Local Authority Information Systems responsible for My Number cards, publishes a list of photo booth operators that support direct applications at their machines. It lists four operators: DNP, ME Group Japan, 北菱プリントテクノロジー, and 三吉工業. 扶桑 is absent (J-LIS list of supported operators). Yet ID VOX’s website provides instructions for “マイナンバーカード撮影+web申請,” or taking a My Number card photo and submitting a web application, and 500 locations in its list are marked as supporting web applications. The company has not explained how these fit together.

For Taiwanese readers, this feature is relevant only to people living in Japan for the medium or long term who have resident registration. Tourists do not have a My Number and cannot use it.

eSIMs: ID Photo Booths Also Sell Mobile Data Plans

Since July 23, 2026, 扶桑 has sold SIMNOW prepaid eSIMs at some ID VOX booths. These are the “プレミアム eSIM” product from MAYA ビジネスソリューションズ. Unlimited-data plans, including tax, cost ¥1,000 for one day, ¥2,000 for three days, ¥4,000 for seven days, and ¥8,000 for 15 days. The company says the purchase process supports multiple languages (扶桑 press release on valuepress). The official English introduction page says they can be purchased at “thousands” of locations nationwide, but only 189 locations in the list carry an eSIM label. The two sources use inconsistent counts; this article follows the list.

Other Features Described by the Company

  • ID VOX’s website says the booths use SLR cameras, with lighting supervised by a professional photographer.
  • Retakes are unlimited. After a photo is taken, the booth automatically checks its specifications; the company says this can reduce specification problems when applying for passports and driver’s licenses.
  • Uploaded photos are stored in the cloud for six months. During that period, users can return to a booth for additional prints or save them to a phone through the app.
  • The website says it supports 93 ID photo specifications, as of July 2024.
  • 扶桑 ran two promotional periods featuring voice guidance by voice actors: one beginning in 2023, and another from March 2025 through February 2026. Selecting voice actor mode cost an additional ¥200. No announcement was found about whether it would continue afterward.

5. Taking Photos: Prices, Steps, and Sizes

Prices

The official ID VOX FAQ, checked on September 25, 2026, says prices vary by photo product and installation location. Standard photo prints generally cost ¥900 or ¥1,000. The website does not state the surcharge for beauty-mode prints or list a separate charge for downloading digital files through the app.

Steps for Taking Photos

A Photo ME ID photo booth beside a shop wall in Kita Ward, Nagoya, in February 2024. It has a white body and an orange-red curtain, with red “ID Photos” lettering on the canopy and prices printed on the side panel. The advertising portraits on the panel have been blurred. A beverage vending machine stands to the right. This is not an ID VOX booth.

ID photo booths on Japanese streets generally look like this: a small curtained compartment containing a seat, screen, and camera, with photos dispensed through an outlet on the outside. This is a Photo ME booth in Kita Ward, Nagoya, photographed in February 2024, rather than an ID VOX booth. This site could not find an openly licensed photograph confirmed to show an ID VOX booth, so a booth from another operator is used to illustrate the general appearance. For an introduction to Photo ME, see the Photo ME article. This site blurred the advertising portraits on the panel. Photograph by 円周率3パーセント, CC BY-SA 4.0; original image.

ID VOX’s website does not provide a step-by-step description of the standard photo-taking process. The following steps are compiled from its explanations of uploading, reprinting, and features:

  1. Select the intended use and size on the booth screen, such as “パスポート” for a passport.
  2. Select the background color on the screen. Some machines have a fixed background color that cannot be changed.
  3. Select the photo mode: standard or beauty.
  4. Take the photo. If you are unhappy with it, you can retake it as many times as you like.
  5. Before printing, the booth asks whether you want to upload the photo. If you want a digital file, select “する,” meaning yes. A 10-digit access code, labeled “アクセスコード,” will be printed on the photo sheet.
  6. Pay and collect the printed photos.

ID VOX’s website does not state whether the booth screen offers Chinese or English interfaces, and this site found no information on that point.

Sizes and Uses

The main sizes listed in ID VOX’s official ID photo size guide, as of July 2024, are:

Size, height × width Uses listed on the official website, selected examples
45 × 35 mm パスポート (passport), My Number card, international driving permit, most national qualifications
40 × 30 mm Résumé, residence card, special permanent resident certificate, TOEIC, kanji proficiency test
30 × 24 mm Japanese driver’s license, English proficiency test
60 × 40 mm National examinations for physicians, nurses, and other professions

Other sizes include 30 × 25, 30 × 30, 50 × 50, 28 × 24, and 35 × 30 mm. The situations Taiwanese people most commonly encounter in Japan correspond to the following options:

Situation Which use to select at the booth What to watch for
Renewing a Taiwan passport or replacing a lost one, through Taiwan’s representative office in Japan パスポート — passport, 45 × 35 mm Choose a plain white background and leave beauty mode off.
Residence card for study, a working holiday, or employment 在留カード — residence card, 40 × 30 mm The required distance from the top of the head to the chin is 25 ± 3 mm. The company does not state whether the booth adjusts the photo accordingly.
Converting a Taiwan driver’s license to a Japanese license, known as 外免切替 運転免許 — driver’s license, 30 × 24 mm Leave approximately 3 mm of space above the head.
Résumé for part-time work or job applications in Japan 履歴書 — résumé, 40 × 30 mm The bonus résumé-size photo provided with passport photos can also be used.
Driving in Japan with a Taiwan driver’s license and its Japanese translation No photo needed The Japanese translation does not require a photo.

The main point of the table is that most situations in which Taiwanese people use ID VOX involve living in Japan: residence cards, license conversion, and photos for job applications. Short-term travelers mainly need it when replacing a lost passport. Driving with a Taiwan driver’s license and a Japanese translation does not require a photo.

Three Things to Watch for When Taking Taiwan Passport Photos

  • Taiwan’s passport photo dimensions are the same as Japan’s “パスポート” size: 4.5 cm high and 3.5 cm wide, with 3.2 to 3.6 cm from the top of the head to the chin. Select “パスポート” at the booth (Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifications).
  • Choose a plain white background for Taiwan passport photos. Taiwan’s representative office in Japan explicitly requires a “plain white background.” Japanese passports also accept a light blue background, so if the booth defaults to light blue or gray, change it to white. A machine with a fixed background that cannot be set to white is unsuitable.
  • Leave beauty mode off for Taiwan passport photos. The representative office explicitly states that “selfie beauty mode or retouching must not be used either.” Select standard photo mode.

The last two requirements come from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan’s passport renewal instructions. The same page also says that “photo review is strict, and many applicants have had their applications rejected; having photos taken at a photography studio is recommended.” The representative office makes the final decision on whether photos taken in an ID photo booth are accepted.

6. Downloading Digital Files Through the App

ID VOX digital files must be downloaded through the dedicated IDPhotoDL2 app. The process is:

  1. When taking the photo, select “する” on the upload screen and note the 10-digit access code printed on the photo sheet.
  2. Install the free IDPhotoDL2 app on your phone (iOS / Android).
  3. Enter the access code in the app and tap “登録,” meaning register.
  4. Select the intended use and size in the app, adjust the positions of the top of the head and chin, and tap “画像を保存,” meaning save image, to save a JPEG. The app also supports custom sizes.

A few things to know before using it:

  • IDPhotoDL2 has a Japanese-only interface.
  • Photos are stored in the cloud for six months from the date they were taken. At the end of that period, images on the server and in the app are deleted. Images already saved to the phone’s photo library are unaffected.
  • Access codes cannot be reissued. It is best to photograph the code with your phone as soon as you collect the photo sheet.
  • The website warns that some locations do not support the app. The list marks 1,316 locations as “アプリ対応,” or app-compatible.
  • For additional prints, return to any ID VOX booth, select “再プリント,” meaning reprint, on the home screen, enter the access code, and select the intended use to print.
  • For machine failures or refunds, the customer service number listed on the website is 0120-579-678, available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except during year-end/New Year and summer holidays.

FAQ

Which company operates ID VOX?

Kyoto-based 株式会社扶桑プレシジョン (FUSO PRECISION). Established in 1995, the company has capital of ¥15 million and had 15 employees as of July 2026. Its main business is printer-related software and image processing.

Is ID VOX the same as DNP’s IDVOX or ID-Spot?

They are separate networks. What DNP acquired in 2020 was the ID photo booth business operated by カジタク (KJS), which DNP began converting to its own ID-Spot brand in 2022. The ID VOX website domain has been registered under the name of 扶桑’s representative since 2014, and the website has operated under 扶桑’s name since 2022. Neither party has publicly explained 扶桑’s role during the カジタク period.

How much does an ID VOX photo session cost?

The official FAQ says prices vary by photo product and installation location, with standard photo prints generally costing ¥900 or ¥1,000, as checked on September 25, 2026. The website does not state the surcharge for beauty-mode prints.

Can I pay at ID VOX with Alipay or WeChat Pay?

Yes. The official FAQ lists PayPay, d払い, 楽天ペイ, メルペイ, WeChat Pay, and Alipay as supported QR payment services. Of the 1,320 locations nationwide in the official list, 1,307 are marked as accepting QR payments. Cash is also accepted.

Can I use ID VOX for Taiwan passport photos?

The size matches: the booth’s “パスポート” option is 45 × 35 mm, the same as Taiwan’s passport photo specification. However, you must choose a plain white background and select standard photo mode with beauty mode off. Both are explicit requirements of Taiwan’s representative office in Japan. The office also says photo review is strict and recommends having photos taken at a photography studio. Final acceptance is determined by the representative office.

How do I get the digital file from ID VOX?

When taking the photo, select “する” on the upload screen. A 10-digit access code will be printed on the photo sheet. Install the free IDPhotoDL2 app on your phone, enter the access code, select a size, and save the image as a JPEG. The app has a Japanese-only interface, photos are stored in the cloud for six months, and access codes cannot be reissued.
