A2 paper is 42 × 59.4 cm, or about 16.54 × 23.39 inches.

A2 is the size many people meet the first time they need something one size up from A3: a wall calendar, a poster, an architectural drawing, or a display chart for a shop. Here are the answers first:

A2 size quick reference

Unit A2 size
Centimeters 42 × 59.4 cm
Millimeters 420 × 594 mm
Inches about 16.54 × 23.39 in

One sentence is all you need to remember: A2 is two A3 sheets put together. A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm, so two side by side make 59.4 × 42 cm. Turn that sideways and you have A2’s 42 × 59.4 cm. In the same way, fold an A1 sheet in half once and you also land here.

A2 is 42 × 59.4 cm (420 × 594 mm), equal to two A3 sheets and half of A1. At 150 DPI, A2 is 2480 × 3508 px, exactly the same pixel count as A4 at 300 DPI.

Where A2 sits in the A series: the folding logic

The whole A-series family follows one rule: each step is a fold in half (or a doubling), and the aspect ratio is fixed at 1 : √2, so the shape stays the same after folding.

Size cm Relationship to A2
A0 84.1 × 118.9 Four times A2
A1 59.4 × 84.1 Twice A2 (two A2 sheets side by side)
A2 42 × 59.4 Reference size
A3 29.7 × 42 A2 folded in half
A4 21 × 29.7 A2 folded in half twice
A5 14.8 × 21 A2 folded in half three times (one eighth)

The same move works in both directions: A2 folded is A3, and A3 folded is A4; double A2 and you get A1, and double again for A0. The most useful takeaway for design is that one layout can be scaled proportionally along the whole family. An A2 wall calendar design can become an A3 desk calendar without a new layout, with type sizes and margins shrinking together. The neighboring sizes have their own guides: A3 Paper Size and A4 Paper Size. Fold once more and you reach the notebook and planner size, A5.

A2 vs US sizes: 17 × 22 and 18 × 24 inches

The United States has no A2. The closest inch-based sizes are 17 × 22 in (ANSI C, used for engineering drawings) and the 18 × 24 in poster, a standard poster and frame size.

Size cm Inches Compared with A2
A2 (ISO) 42 × 59.4 about 16.54 × 23.39 Reference size
ANSI C 43.2 × 55.9 17 × 22 1.2 cm wider, 3.5 cm shorter
Poster 45.7 × 61 18 × 24 3.7 cm wider, 1.6 cm longer

None of these is a drop-in replacement for A2. ANSI C is a little wider and noticeably shorter, and an 18 × 24 in frame is larger in both directions, so an A2 print will sit inside it with a margin or need a mat. ANSI C also has a different aspect ratio (about 1 : 1.29 rather than 1 : 1.41), so an A2 layout scaled onto it ends up with white space at the sides. Before printing or buying a frame, confirm whether the file is set up as 420 × 594 mm or as an inch size.

What A2 is used for

  • Wall calendars: A2 is a common size for large hanging calendars, with one month per page and numbers big enough to read from across a living room.
  • Shop posters and display charts: noticeably more presence than A3, without needing anything more specialized than a wide-format printer.
  • Section drawings in architecture and engineering: full drawing sets use A0 or A1, while enlarged detail drawings of one section often come out at A2.
  • Teaching charts and presentation boards: a size that works both for passing around and for pinning up in a classroom or meeting room.
  • Fine-art prints and art reproductions: A2 is one of the most common sizes for selling prints and poster-style art.

How many pixels do you need to print A2?

The conversion formula is: millimeters ÷ 25.4 × DPI.

Resolution Pixels (420 × 594 mm) Typical use
300 DPI 4961 × 7016 px Calendars, fine-art prints and displays viewed up close
150 DPI 2480 × 3508 px Posters and event charts viewed from a distance on a wall

The deciding factor is viewing distance, not “the higher the better.” Use 300 DPI for anything people will step up to and examine. For something hanging on a wall and seen from two or three meters away, 150 DPI looks almost identical, and the file is only a quarter of the size.

An easy-to-remember fact: A2 at 150 DPI equals A4 at 300 DPI

The 150 DPI row in the table above is 2480 × 3508 px. If those numbers look familiar, it is because they are exactly the pixel dimensions of A4 at 300 DPI.

The reason is simple: each side of A2 is exactly twice as long as the same side of A4, so when you halve the resolution, the pixel counts line up perfectly. In practice, this gives one file two identities. An image prepared for printing at A4 is also a usable A2 poster for viewing at a distance. In the other direction, if the file for an A2 poster has at least A4 print-quality resolution, it is already good enough for a wall. The A-series folding logic works not only on paper but also in pixels.

Where to print A2

Like A1, A2 is beyond what office printers and self-service copiers handle; their largest size is usually A3 or 11 × 17 in. Your options are a wide-format printer at a copy shop, a dedicated large-format print shop, or, for large quantities, a commercial printer. A copy shop is fastest for a single rush job. Go to a large-format print shop if the material matters, such as photo paper or synthetic paper. A commercial printer only makes financial sense for runs of hundreds of calendars or posters. Before sending the file, confirm the bleed and color mode the shop requires; it can save you the cost of reprinting.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimeters is A2?

42 × 59.4 cm, or 420 × 594 mm, which is about 16.54 × 23.39 inches. It is the size of an A1 sheet folded in half once.

How much bigger is A2 than A3?

A2 has twice the area of A3. Two A3 sheets (29.7 × 42 cm) side by side make one A2 sheet; in the other direction, A2 folded in half is A3.

How many pixels do you need to print A2?

4961 × 7016 px at 300 DPI for print and 2480 × 3508 px at 150 DPI. Use 300 DPI for calendars and displays viewed up close; 150 DPI is usually enough for posters viewed from a distance on a wall.

Why does A2 at 150 DPI have the same pixels as A4 at 300 DPI?

Because each side of A2 is exactly twice as long as A4’s, so halving the resolution makes the pixel counts match: both are 2480 × 3508 px. It is the A-series folding logic carried over to pixels.

Is A2 the same as an 18 × 24 inch poster?

No. An 18 × 24 in poster is 45.7 × 61 cm, larger than A2 in both directions. The closest US engineering size, 17 × 22 in (ANSI C), is slightly wider and noticeably shorter than A2. Check the page setup before printing or framing.

Can I print A2 on an office printer or self-service copier?

No. These machines usually go up to A3 or 11 × 17 in at most. A2 needs a wide-format printer at a copy shop or a dedicated large-format print shop.
