Key Findings
- Entering Taiwan’s top 10% requires household net worth of NT$33.91 million (~US$1.04 million) (DGBAS official deciles, year-end 2021).
- No official Taiwanese statistic directly counts how many people hold NT$10 million (~US$308,000). The threshold falls in a gap between government decile data, financial-regulator client counts, and private bank surveys.
- Interpolating the official deciles: NT$10 million in household net worth sits at roughly the 55th percentile — about 45% of Taiwanese households (roughly 4.4 million of ~9.9 million households) exceed it.
- On a per-person basis (household wealth ÷ 2.7 average members), NT$10 million sits at roughly the 85th percentile — about 15% of individuals. Same threshold, household vs. individual framing, a threefold difference.
- Net worth here includes real estate net of mortgages — in Taipei, a single older apartment can clear NT$10 million on its own, which is why the household share is so high.
The two threshold tables
Household basis (official DGBAS deciles, year-end 2021): see the full table in Taiwan Household Wealth Distribution. Anchors: median NT$8.94 million; top 10% at NT$33.91 million.
Individual basis (structural conversion, household ÷ 2.7 persons):
| Decile boundary | Individual net worth (NT$) | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| D1 (10%) | 530,000 | 16,000 |
| D2 (20%) | 1.18 million | 36,000 |
| D3 (30%) | 1.87 million | 58,000 |
| D4 (40%) | 2.63 million | 81,000 |
| D5 (50%, median) | 3.31 million | 102,000 |
| D6 (60%) | 4.07 million | 125,000 |
| D7 (70%) | 5.41 million | 166,000 |
| D8 (80%) | 7.78 million | 239,000 |
| D9 (90%) | 12.56 million | 386,000 |
Taiwan publishes no official individual wealth deciles; this conversion divides household thresholds by the average household size (~2.7 persons, a long-run DGBAS figure). It is a positioning tool, not a valuation.
The NT$10 million question, answered carefully
NT$10 million (roughly US$308,000) is the wealth milestone most commonly discussed in Taiwan. The correct starting point for any citation: the government does not publish this number. DGBAS publishes decile boundaries; the Financial Supervisory Commission and banks publish “high-asset client” counts (with double-counting issues across banks); private surveys (KPMG × E.SUN, CTBC × BCG) study the NT$100 million+ segment. NT$10 million falls between all of them.
What interpolation of the official deciles supports:
| Question | Basis | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| How many households hold NT$10M+? | Household net worth, incl. real estate | ~45% (55.1st percentile, interpolated between D5 = 8.94M and D6 = 11.00M) |
| How many individuals hold NT$10M+? | Household wealth allocated per person | ~15% (84.6th percentile, between individual D8 = 7.78M and D9 = 12.56M) |
Three limitations that must travel with these numbers:
- Linear interpolation, not an official count. The true distribution between decile boundaries need not be linear.
- The underlying data is from year-end 2021. Taiwan’s equity and property markets have risen since; the true shares are likely somewhat higher. A rough scaling factor of ~1.15 (from the National Wealth Statistics update) can be applied to the thresholds.
- The individual figure is a statistical allocation, not actual ownership. Dividing household wealth by household size builds a comparison baseline; it does not mean each member holds that amount in their own name.
Where the real dividing lines are
Within Taiwan’s wealth discourse, NT$10 million is closer to “a bit above median household” than to “rich.” The commonly used higher dividing lines:
- NT$30 million (~US$923,000) — the conventional international high-net-worth starting point as used in Taiwanese wealth commentary.
- NT$100 million (~US$3.1 million) — the threshold used by Taiwanese banks and by the KPMG × E.SUN and CTBC × BCG surveys for “high-asset” clients; roughly 124,000 people in 2026, the top ~0.5%. See Taiwan’s NT$100 Million+ Wealthy Population.
- FSC-certified “high-asset customers” (assets of NT$100 million+ with a single bank, bank-certified): about 26,900 people as of June 2026 (26,866 per FSC) — a much narrower, application-based count that should never be conflated with the population-wide estimate.
Methodology & Sources
- DGBAS Household Wealth Distribution Statistics (published April 2024; year-end 2021 data; net worth = assets − liabilities, incl. real estate). Average household size ~2.7 persons per DGBAS demographic data.
- FSC high-asset customer certification count (June 2026).
- Currency conversion: US$1 ≈ NT$32.5 (rate basis used in the underlying Chinese articles, mid-2026); rounded, approximate.
