The short answer
Taiwan’s GDP per capita in 2025 was US$39,515, or NT$1,230,035, according to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), the government statistics agency. Real GDP grew 8.76% that year. In its August 14, 2026 forecast, DGBAS expects GDP per capita to reach US$45,332 in 2026 and US$49,874 in 2027.
| Year | GDP per capita (US$) | GDP per capita (NT$) | Real GDP growth | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 39,515 | 1,230,035 | 8.76% | Revised figure, May 29, 2026 |
| 2026 | 45,332 | 1,449,925 | 11.05% | Forecast, August 14, 2026 |
| 2027 | 49,874 | 1,613,416 | 6.04% | Forecast, August 14, 2026 |
If the 2026 forecast holds, Taiwan’s total GDP would be about US$1.05 trillion, the first time above US$1 trillion. In 2025 it was about US$922 billion.

Between 2015 and 2025, GDP per capita rose about 73% in US dollars and about 69% in New Taiwan dollars. Note that the growth column is real growth (adjusted for inflation), while GDP per capita is nominal, so the two cannot be compared directly.
Why the US$ figure moves with the exchange rate
DGBAS calculates GDP per capita in New Taiwan dollars and then converts it at the year’s average exchange rate. The dollar figure therefore reflects economic growth, prices, population and the exchange rate all at once.
2022 and 2023 show the effect clearly:
- In NT$, GDP per capita kept rising, from NT$927,776 in 2021 to NT$1,010,959 in 2023.
- Over the same period, the New Taiwan dollar weakened from 28.02 to 31.16 per US dollar.
- As a result, GDP per capita in US$ fell from US$33,111 to US$32,444.
In 2025 the opposite happened: the currency strengthened, and the US$ figure grew 15.4% while the NT$ figure grew 11.9%. Taiwan’s central bank has made the same point, noting that nominal per capita GDP is driven by real GDP, prices, population and the exchange rate, and recommending purchasing-power-parity figures for cross-country comparisons.
How Taiwan compares with Japan, Korea and Singapore
For international comparisons, the IMF World Economic Outlook converts every economy with the same method. Figures from the April 2026 edition, in current US dollars:
| Economy | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 (projection) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | 34,252 | 39,489 | 42,103 |
| South Korea | 36,239 | 36,227 | 37,412 |
| Japan | 33,820 | 35,973 | 35,703 |
| Hong Kong | 54,445 | 56,893 | 59,640 |
| Singapore | 94,897 | 99,365 | 107,758 |
| United States | 86,173 | 89,991 | 94,430 |
In the IMF’s data, Taiwan moved ahead of South Korea in 2025, about 9% higher, and is about 10% above Japan. Hong Kong and Singapore remain well ahead.
The IMF and DGBAS figures for Taiwan differ slightly. For 2025 they are close (US$39,489 versus US$39,515). For 2026 the gap is larger: the IMF’s US$42,103 dates from April, while DGBAS has since raised its 2026 growth forecast from 7.71% in February to 11.05% in August, and now forecasts US$45,332. GDP per capita is not a typical income
GDP per capita divides the value of everything produced in a year by the mid-year population. In 2025 that was NT$1.23 million, or about NT$102,500 a month. It is not what a typical person earns: GDP includes corporate profits, depreciation and government output, much of which never reaches household paychecks.
For comparison, the median annual total earnings of employees in 2024 was NT$546,000, roughly half of that year’s GDP per capita (NT$1.10 million). See Taiwan salary percentiles for the full distribution and the Taiwan minimum wage for the legal floor. The same DGBAS dataset puts 2025 gross national income (GNI) per capita at US$40,626.
When the numbers are updated
DGBAS revises the figures several times a year:
- February: preliminary figure for the previous year and a forecast for the current year. The 2025 preliminary figure was US$39,492 (February 13, 2026).
- May: revised figure for the previous year. 2025 was revised to US$39,515 (May 29, 2026).
- August and November: updated forecasts for the current and next year.
The 2026 forecast has changed three times this year: US$44,181 in February, US$45,610 in May and US$45,332 in August. The first official estimate for 2026 is due in February 2027.
